Introducing Our Hike leaders
Discover the dedicated individuals who guide our club and love the outdoors as much as you do. Each member brings passion and experience to our community.
Beverly Hackett
Beverly kicked off her hiking career in the Adirondack Mountain Club of New York and eventually became a “46er”, climbing all the High Peaks over 4,000 feet. She took her love of hiking to Nepal, crossing 18,000-foot passes where the views were breathtaking, and so was literally everything else at that altitude. When she moved to the high country of southwest Colorado, she skied, snowshoed, and hiked in the San Juans and even climbed a couple of the “easier” 14ers. She also met her future husband, Warner Paige, while snowshoeing—proof that romance can bloom even when you’re bundled up like a walking marshmallow. Beverly moved to the desert in 2022, where former club president Don Bailey promptly recruited her as a hike leader, even though she knew nothing about desert hiking—unless you count “it’s hot and everything has spikes". "I love exploring everything the desert has to offer,” Beverly says, “and introducing new hikers to the trails in the Valley and beyond. The trails are a great place to meet people and make new friends… assuming they can keep up.”.
Bridget LaPointe
Bridget joined the SCPD Hiking Club soon after she and her husband Greg moved to Sun City in June 2025. She is originally from Orange County, California, but she spent a good thirty years living in Temecula Valley. That's where her passion for hiking first sparked, just enjoying casual outings with friends. As a hike leader, Bridget’s main focus is on organizing and guiding easy and easy/moderate excursions. Her biggest goal is to make sure new members feel welcome and help them discover all the wonderful joys and benefits of getting out and exploring nature on foot. When not out on the trails, Bridget tries to keep pretty active. You can find her playing tennis, enjoying some casual pickleball, or out on her bike.
Don Bailey
Ed Hopkins
Ed discovered hiking when he moved to Sun City in October 2020 during Covid. He hiked at least 3 times a week during that time and met some wonderful fellow hikers. Ed continues to hike to keep fit and explore new terrains with the Club.
Jack Maddan
Jack has been a member and a hike leader for the SCPD Hiking Club since 2002. In addition, he has been a Patrol and Search & Rescue Volunteer at San Jacinto State Park, a tour guide for Red Jeep Tours and most recently a volunteer docent and hike leader for the Coachella Valley Preserve. In the last few years, Jack’s focus has been conducting local interpretative hikes in hiking venues close to Sun City.
Jim Biewer
I have been a hike leader since 2018 after moving from Chicago to SCPD full time. I enjoy introducing our club members to the wonders of the desert and mountains in and around our valley. One of the ways I like to add to the hiking experience is by identifying the plants and wildlife we encounter along the trail and sharing this information with our hikers.
Joel Friedrick
Since relocating from San Diego in early 2025, my wife and I have proudly called Palm Desert our full-time home. For over a quarter-century, we explored nearly every trail San Diego has to offer, whether on foot or by mountain bike. My journey began in Minneapolis and led me to the Navy for six years immediately following high school, followed by a long career in mechanical engineering. Yet, after all those miles, I can say with certainty: nothing compares to the beauty of Southern California.
Karen Bieber
Kerry Berman
Kerry first moved to Palm Springs in 1973 and opened up a real estate company. He retired after 35 years and is now enjoying a great life in Sun City with the Hiking and Pickle Ball Clubs. He is a Certified Interpretive Guide, California Naturalist, Conservation Ambassador and published author. After four back surgeries it is a miracle God has allowed me to pursue my passions. All my hikes are easy, interpretive. Anytime I get an urge to do an advanced hike, I lay down until it goes away. Hope you enjoy the club.
Kevin Rivette
President and Hike Leader
Linda Biewer
Since 2017, I have had the privilege of serving as a hike leader for the SCPD Hiking Club. My passion for the trails began in 2010 during a visit to Vail, Colorado, where I discovered hiking as the perfect, low-impact fitness alternative to tennis. This transition ignited a decade-long journey of exploration, during which I have led excursions ranging from the historic apple orchards and towering oaks of Oak Glen Preserve in Beaumont to the iconic boulder piles and desert washes of Joshua Tree National Park. Whether navigating steep switchbacks or enjoying the serene views between these two landmarks, my goal is to provide safe, inclusive, and invigorating outdoor experiences that foster both physical health and community connection. I look forward to sharing the next trail with you.
Lynn Overcashier
Lynn, along with her husband Steve has lived in Sun City since June 2025, and availed themselves of the many tune up hikes provided by the hiking club in fall of 2025. Having lived in Germany and Switzerland as a teenager, she was an avid hiker and camper in the Alps. Many vacations have been spent at hiking destinations, like Glacier National Park, the Cascades, the Rockies, and especially Yosemite, which was her home for several years. She is excited to explore the many local desert hiking trails and plans to focus initially on easy to moderate hikes.
Lynne Davidson
In our never-ending quest to stay healthy as we age, Lynne loves to encourage hikers to challenge themselves both mentally and physically as we enjoy the great outdoors in our beautiful valley.
Oscar Mena
I was born in central Mexico and raised in San Jose, California, where my love for the outdoors first took root. It all started when my family bought a boat and we began spending weekends on the lake. I quickly fell in love with the sense of freedom and the peaceful beauty of nature. When our boating days came to an end, I found that same joy in road and mountain cycling, and more recently, in hiking. Each new trail reminds me why I’m drawn to the outdoors—the tranquility, the open space, and the chance to reconnect with myself and the world around me. Although I never imagined myself living in the desert, a few years here have completely changed my perspective. The landscapes are stunning, and the hiking opportunities are incredible. I’m excited to share this passion with others and inspire them to discover the joy and peace that nature offers.
Rick Macias
My love for the outdoors started at the ripe old age of 3 weeks when my parents took me tent camping in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. Growing up, we regularly went camping, hiking and backpacking and I was also heavily involved in scouts. Some of my outdoor experiences include backpacking various segments of the Appalachian trail, orienteering, cross country skiing, alpine skiing, adventure racing, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, endurance obstacle course racing, and ultra-trail running. I grew up primarily in Florida and moved to Minnesota at the age of 27. My wife and I retired in January of 2025 and started spending the winter months here in “Fun” City (Fun is spelled correctly based on the lifestyle here). I joined the hiking club upon arrival in Sun City & participated in my first hiking club hike on my 3rd day here. I became a hike leader to help provide the same wonderful experiences others have provided me. The club leaders & membership are all great folks. Join me on a hike and we will have an amazing time in the great outdoors!
Robert Heckert
Robert has been a resident of Sun City for 10 years. He started hiking in his teens in British Columbia, Canada with his brothers. After moving to the Coachella Valley, he began hiking the local trails with his son. He is now familiar with many and wants to share that knowledge with others as a hike leader. He likes to lead advanced hikes with a destination (peak, oasis, mine, historical interest) enroute. In addition to hiking, Robert plays a lot of pickleball and practices yoga. Staying fit and enjoying the outdoors is a priority.
Ron Gleason
Ron started visiting Sun City in the late 90's and finally retired in 2023 so he could enjoy warm winters after many decades in cold and snowy Chicago. The trails give us ample opportunity to enjoy the sun, camaraderie and exercise. Scoping out BigHorn Sheep, lizards and wild tortoises is a bonus. Each hike is a new adventure, and the mountains are gorgeous, especially when you're on them!
Steve Overcashier
Steve became a full time resident of Sun City in June 2025. As a child, he hiked with his parents who were avid backpackers. After he and Lynn met in 2007, she shared her love of the Yosemite Valley and its fabled trails and vistas. Together they have hiked in Austria, the Baltics, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and numerous other places up and down the Pacific coast. In addition to a love of the outdoors, Steve loves to cook - almost always accompanied by a glass of fine wine. He is also a performer in the Sun City Performing Arts club. While still new to the Cochella Valley, Steve is excited to learn and help lead many of the moderate hikes in the region.
Tim Stigers
Warner Paige
Warner hails from Indianapolis and Telluride, which means he can handle both flat cornfields and mountains without breaking a sweat. He’s been in Sun City since 2022. With 25 years of experience leading hiking and snowshoeing trips in the mountains around Telluride, Warner has pretty much seen it all — from glorious summit views to hikers who swear they’re “not out of breath, just admiring the scenery.” He loves getting outside, meeting new people, and showing folks his favorite trails. Ask him his secret to a perfect day and he’ll tell you: “Easy….start with a picturesque trail, add good company and electrolytes, and finish with the same amazing hikers I started with! Warner leads easy and moderate hikes… because he’s wise, not lazy. And with a new robotically engineered knee, he’ll be hiking with renewed passion.
