Lost Palms Oasis Hike

This 7-mile Moderate/Advanced hike with 900 feet of overall gain begins at the pretty oasis of Cottonwood Springs, a short distance from the Cottonwood Visitor Center. From here, the trail passes through heaps of huge boulders in Sonoran desert scenery of desert willows, barrel cactus, and ocotillo. The undulating trail traverses a series of sandy washes and higher ridges, ending at a rocky plateau overlooking the palm oasis, and, in a different direction, the Salton Sea Basin.  We have seen big horn sheep along the road to the trailhead in years past, in addition to desert tortoises on the trail in 2024. We will enjoy a snack/lunch break overlooking the Lost Palms Oasis, which is the largest group of California Fan Palms in Joshua Tree National Park.  There may be some wildflowers to see along I-10 on our way into the Park.

Bring trail snacks and/or lunch, 2 liters of water, and your National Park Pass (if you have one).

Hiking boots with good tread and hiking poles are highly recommended.
