Whitewater Sound of Music Loop

This advanced 6.6 mile hike with 1242 ft. overall gain begins at the main parking lot adjacent to the Whitewater Preserve Visitor Center.  After crossing the river on a bridge, we will head south on the Canyon View trail as we climb a series of switchbacks, where we will have a bird’s eye view of the changes to the river basin from 2023’s Tropical Storm Hilary. After reaching the top of our ascent, we continue south on the PCT to the ‘Sound of Music’ plateau, where we stop for a snack and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding San Gorgonio wilderness. Afterwards, we return to the top of the switchbacks to pick up the Canyon View trail that takes us along the ridge and then descends to Whitewater Canyon Road.  The riverside trail takes us back to the parking lot.  If we are lucky, the brittle bush and other wildflowers may be in full bloom.

This is an undulating trail that has no shade. Bring a minimum 2 liters of water.  Boots with good tread and hiking poles are recommended.
